Virginia cattlemen held an inventory July 1 and reported a total of 2,200.000 head of cattle and calves, a 16 percent increase over the same period last year and 26 percent above Jan. 1.
Arthur L. Eller Jr., Extension specialist in animal science at Virginia Tech, said that with this inventory. Virginia ranks 19th nationally in cattle and calves on farms.
The largest single increase in numbers was in beef cattle with a current inventory of 818.000, up 20 percent from a year ago. Milk cows stand at 170.000, which is an increase of one percent from 1979.
Heifers over 500 pounds were up 14 percent at 271.000 head. Beef replacements, at 132.000, show a 31 percent increase over the past year; dairy replacements show a seven percent increase. Steers over 500 pounds, however, are down four percent and stand at 209.000 head.
Bulls over 500 pounds show a 34 percent increase at 51.000 head. Heifers, bulls and steers under 500 pounds total 681.000 for a 22 percent increase. The 1980 calf crop
