His next step after college was a short stint in medical school in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins: “I realized rather quickly in 1969, shortly before coming to Rappahannock County to live. Mrs. O’Connor has also been very hard at work on Pinafore. sewing the elaborate costumes for the well-dressed nineteenthcentury characters.
O’Connor has been a fan of Gilbert and Sullivan for years, and he volunteered some of the history of the timeless H. M. S. Pinafore. It was the third collaboration for Gilbert and Sullivan and was so successful in London that it was widely put on throughout the United States. “Copyright laws being what they were then,” O’Connor said, “all of these versions were pirated, or unauthorized, and did not enrich the creators by one penny.”
Finally the team of Gilbert and Sullivan and their producer, D’Oyly Carte, rehearsed in New York in an effort to compete with the fraudulent American versions appearing there. The critics fell in love with the authentic version and the musical got rave reviews.
