He advised parents who are uncertain about the effectiveness of their children’s protection to check with the Rappahannock Health Department of their family doctor on the advisability of being reimmunized.
Einarson noted that early measles symptoms are often mistaken for the onset of a common cold. Eight days to two weeks after exposure, the infected person may have a sore throat, muscular aches, eye inflammation or fever—all before the distinctive rash appears.
He cautioned that measles are contagious from first exposure until three days after the rash breaks out and so children with cold symptoms who may have been exposed to the disease should be isolated until it can be determined for certain that they don’t have measles. All suspected cases should be seen by a doctor, he stressed.
Dr. Einarson emphasized that red measles leave patients very, very sick. The disease puts a strain on the whole system, he said.
