eight highway districts. Fairfax County, part of Culpeper District, topped the list of cleanup costs for counties with S>iiS,38t! while Greene County, another Culpeper District locality, can boast of having the state’s most litter conscious motorists with cleanup costs of only $40.
According to C. O. Leigh, the highway department's maintenance engineer, motorists can do the following to help cut cleanup costs:
— Keep litter bags or containers in their vehicles and use them until trash can be disposed of in a proper manner.
—Use litter barrels placed at rest areas and other sites along the state highways. Some 1,400 such containers are provided by the department for litter disposal.
—Encourage officials to establish local refuse disposal facilities to help stop the use of roadside containers for household trash.
In addition to litter cleanup, which continues year-round, the department’s spring cleaning chores include re-painting trash barrels and cleaning and repairing picnic tables and other facilities at rest areas, waysides, and picnic areas.
