to get funding to expand the loan closet with more beds, commodes and walkers. The need is so great. Donations made during the annual Crusade can help to meet this need. Contributions also go towards supporting clinics sponsored by the local unit. Twenty percent of the men and women screened in Rappahannock’s detection clinics for skin, oral, breast and uterine cancer have been referred to their personal physicians for further tests or treatment. If just one of these individuals is saved through prompt attention they wouldn’t otherwise receive without the Cancer Society’s free clinics, it makes the return on our contributions immeasurable. How many dollars and cents in donations equals one life?
The same applies to other Cancer Society projects funded with the money collected during the annual Crusade. Was there a youngster in your house who vowed never to smoke and brought home lectures on the dangers of cigarettes after seeing "The Feminine Mystique,” the Cancer Society’s film on lung cancer shown at Rappahannock County High and Wakefield schools? If a single teenager turns his or her back on tobacco because of the message hammered across by that film, our donations will have been repaid countless times over.
The Rappahannock unit plans to show “The Feminine Mystique” to the local woman’s club and special films on colo-rectal and prostate cancer to senior citizen and men’s groups, widening the Society’s educational program here.
