of the McNeils’ rhythm instruments. Thus well known and not so well known songs of the American people were enthusiastically enjoyed by all.
Favorites among the songs and ballads were Scarborough Fair (a Neil Simon arrangement) from the colonial period, Cielito Undo from the Spanish Southwest area, Shenandoah (a fur traders’ song, but better known as a sea chanty) and Strawberry Roan from the westward movement, Goober Peas from the period of the War between the States, songs of circuit riders and camp meetings, songs from the feminist, suffrage and temperance movements, Bill Bailey Won’t You Please Come Home: from the jazz period, and finally I’m My Own Grandpa from the new folk heroes.
To close their program, the McNeils sang the Hebrew song Hava Nagila.
