results of statewide testing. He suggested comparing county scores with counties similar in geography, population and economic make-up to Rappahannock in order to get a clearer picture of what the test results mean.
Chart 2 compares Rappahannock County fourthgrade scores with Warren. Fauquier,. Culpeper, Page and Madison Counties. As might be expected, scores are closest to those contiguous counties which most closely parallel Rappahannock and usually - but not always - lower than scores recorded in Fauquier and Culpeper counties.
Rappahannock fourteenyear-olds led every contiguous county in Social Studies with a score of 58 and recorded the lowest score in all six counties in Educational Ability - (40).
In Reading. Language Arts, Social Studies and Science - four of the six categories tested - Rappahannock seventeen yearolds led seventeen-year-olds in each adjoining county.
Charts in each age category are compared with a consistently high-ranking and low-ranking county to give readers some idea of the range of the percentile scores.
Robert Estabrook, Rappahannock School Superintendent, said that he was "pleased, on the whole," with the Rappahannock test results. He noted that, in each age group tested, Rappahannock students scored at or above the educational ability scores measured by the test.
