For versatility, convenience. and decoration, you may want to try growing your vegetables and flowers in raised beds. You can grow most of the same vegetables and flowers above the ground in a raised bed that you can grow in a conventional garden, but often with more ease and in a smaller space.
Construction of a raised bed can be very enjoyable and rewarding. A very simple raised bed may be built out of railroad ties. Stack the R.R. ties on top of each so that they overlap alternately in the corners. Nail the ties together in the corners with 12" spikes so that the entire structure will not fall apart from the pressure of the soil.
