Kreitler’s second request was that the Board agree to pledge an additional $957.00 which would bring the Welfare Department over $3,000.00 in state funds for companion services. These services. Kreitler explained, were for providing some daily care to elderly and disabled people who would otherwise have to seek nursing home care.
"I am sure that this is money well spent.” said Piedmont District Supervisor Charles “Pete” Estes. “But where will it come from? We don't have it. Can you find it in your budget?"
“Our budget is cut close to the bone, just as yours is,” responded Kreitler.
Latham suggested that Kreitler appear before the Board again after January I. when the Supervisors would have a better idea what funds were available. She agreed to do this after checking to see if the state’s offer would stand until then.
In other business, the Board voted to:
—Approve alterations to the existing jail to conform with state guidelines. This approval was necessary in order for Delegate Andy Guest to apply for reimbursement of funds from the General Assembly.
—Schedule a public hearing on Tom Massie's request to the Highway Department to abandon a section of Old 211.
—Approve the DAR's request to plant a cherry tree in front of the Treasurer’s office.
—Allow the placement of a plaque by friends of Ned Jones in his memory on a county building yet to be agreed upon.
—Schedule a public hearing for September 7 on a zoning amendment requested by the proprietors of Blue Ridge Guns to allow shooting ranges by special use permits
