construct a raised bed out of wood. Redwood or cedar is the best wood to use since it is relatively rot-resistant and weathers attractively. Use 4" by 4" corner supports sunken into the ground 12". and 1" to 2" thick boards for the sides. You can make the raised bed any length you wish, but be sure the width is such that the middle of the bed is easily accessible from both sides. A good width to use is four feet. You will want to treat your wooden raised bed with a copper-sulfate wood preservative if the wood has not already been treated at the lumber yard. Do not use pentachlorophenol as this will damage the plants.
