As Liles' vehicle neared the Fauquier-Prince William County line on 1-66, Trooper C. M. Hodges gave chase and had no luck in stopping the man. Near Delaplane Liles’ itinerary deviated from the interstate to northbound Route 17, then to Route 713 east.
