Madrigal Dinner
The Choral Department of Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music will present the Sixth Annual Madrigal Dinner on December 3 at 7:30 p.m.
The traditional Christmas dinner will be held in the Tilford Room of Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester. Trumpet fanfares will herald the arrival and procession of the singers as well as of the traditional wassail bowl and the serving of the three-course prime-rib dinner.
Madrigal singing was brought to England from Italy in the 16th century and was, at first, an informal entertainment at the castles and country homes of the landed gentry. During the twelve days of the Christmas season, there was much entertaining and singing of madrigals.
The Madrigal Singers of Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music began in l')66 as a separate choral group devoted to the performance of madrigal and chamber literature. The group consists of costumed singers, four instrumentalists, and three trumpets. Following their initial procession they will sing and dance during the dinner and will present an after-dinner concert prior to the serving of the traditional flaming plum pudding. The evening will close with group carol singing.
