When the Democratic Party steering committee met in Richmond the following Friday night, it went into a two-hour executive session. Following what was called a "frank and open discussion” of grievances, most of the dissident's reform proposals were adopted, thereby further defanging the uprising.
Deep-Seated Concern
But all of this may have been only the surface manifestation of a more deep-seated concern.
There is a festering resentment among some in the party because of Gov. Robb's dominant role in party affairs. Indeed, there was whispered speculation that the attack on Mr. Diamonstein was intended primarily as a way of "getting at" the governor.
The theory was if Mr. Diamonstein could be forced to resign, it would diminish the governor’s influence. since Mr. Diamonstein is very much a Robb lieutenant. If that was the scheme, it backfired badlv.
