In reading a pre-Christmas catalog from one of the better known sports wear suppliers, also one of the most pensive, operating out of Freeport. Maine, my eye fell on a boot that looked very much like a pair 1 own. In fact I have owned, and worn this pair for nearly si* years, on and off. summer and winter, rain or shine, snow or mud. or Rappahannock County dust and clay.
I bought my boots in the country store in Amissville. After si* years, they were beginning, not to show wear, but more like, feel wear. There was no particular, marked weakness showing. The leader upper seemed a little stiffer than usual, even after a treatment of mink grease. There were signs of cracking, although no cracks where uppers join soles. The inside liners felt thin in a few spots, not quite covering the clinched nail heads, as though the boots were wearing out from the inside at about the same rate they might be wearing out from the outside, or better, wearing in, or apart. Both heels were down a little, and whereas I could not discern that the soles were at any one point growing thin. I have occasionally felt small stones through the soles recently, something I cannot recall in earlier years. . . All of these scattered and slight reminders of the changing conditions of my
