Is it a touchy matter matching the offender to the job? ‘‘Well, we wouldn't assign an assault and battery offender to an orphanage,” Hughes said. "But there are plenty of placements for our rougher clients - parks and recreation, historic renovation projects-there's always some job that an offender can do, no matter how basic his skills. And rather than costing the county to keep him in jail, he’s benefiting the community in ways that might otherwise be paid for by tax or charity dollars."
Hughes has become a weekly visitor to Rappahannock since the beginning of her job in the Held office last summer. “You have a light caseload here - and a consistent judge in Judge (John) Alexander,” she said.
She sits in on General District Court each week and is available to explain the programs she supervises to defendants. At other times, she may be reached in her Warrenton office at 3478675.
