Participants learn about how alcohol affects their driving reflexes. They see films and have group discussions, all aimed at reeducating them in their approach towards alcohol. In addition they take defensive driving classes. District Nine VASAP also provides community education on the dangers of drinking and driving.

Traffic offenders with convictions that are not alcohol-related may be assigned to a driver improvement clinic—an eighthour program costing the defendant $30.00.

Restitution Programs

Also provided by court services are the community service restitution programs. In the fine option program, an offender is allowed to work off a fine he is unable to pay. ‘‘Often fines are assessed in place of a jail term,” Hughes said. "In the past there was no provision for those unable to pay them. It ended up as a dilemma with no out for the poor. The court can’t say - you’re poor, you go to jail; you’re not poor - you pay a fine.”
