The governor's critics say his inner circle is overly exclusive and elitist: that those who are a pan of it would turn the party apparatus into little more than a vehicle for the advancement of whatever national ambitions the governor might have.
There are also dark mutterings that the “Robb mob'' would like to establish a political hegemony in the state as pervasive and powerful as the old Byrd Organization.
Most of the grousing, it would appear, comes from a few senior Democrats who are not without their own prima donna inclinations and are more than a bit pul out by the governor's popularity. Gov. Robb, after all, worked tirelessly for Democratic candidates in this year's campaigns and is, by any measure, the Virginia Democrats' most valuable political asset.
Thus the Diamonstein fracas was probably healthy for the party. It helped clear the air. People got things off their chests. Some positive decisions resulted.
And. if the Democrats are smart, it removed any doubt about where the leadership of the party lies.
