Mr. Diamonstein responds, with considerable justification, that he has not been in his post long enough for his organizational talents to receive a fair test and, further. it is usual procedure for a candidate for an office to concentrate on his own campaign. This is especially true when, as in Mr. Diamonstein’s case, the candidate is running in an area largely dominated by the opposite party.
Gov. Robb immediately rushed to Mr. Diamonstein’s defense. The governor released a statement saying the chairman had his "full and unqualified support.” Telephone calls reportedly crackled out to key Democrats around the state as the governor moved to put down the incipient rebellion.
A few days after the Babalas call for Mr. Diamonstein to step down, but also after the Robb intervention, a meeting was held in the home of Sixth District Chairman Granger MacFarlane. Its purpose was to discuss the future of Mr. Diamonstein in particular and the party in general.
