That calm was shaken two weeks when state Sen. Peter Babalas of Norfolk surprised party officials by calling for the resignation of state Democratic chairman Alan Diamonstein of New port News.
The Babalas move coincided with, but may not have been a part of. other maneuvering going on around the state concerning Mr. Diamonstein’s performance of his job.
Mr. Diamonstein took over as chairman of the party in March, replacing Del. Owen Pickett of Virginia Beach who had resigned to make what proved to be an abortive bid for the Democratic U. S. Senate nomination.
The new chairman's critics charge he has been inattentive to his duties, has failed to move aggressively to build the party and failed to support other Democratic candidates during his own race for reelection to the House of Delegates this year.
Perhaps more significantly, they also say he places his personal loyalty to Gov. Charles S. Robb above his commitment to the party as a whole.
