A chimney fire early Tuesday morning completely gutted a home shared by two brothers and their families.

Michael Wharton and his family and the family of Larry Wharton, each with two small children, were left with nothing but their lives and the clothes on their backs after they escaped from their residence on Route 522 near Scrabble. Michael Wharton was slightly injured in the blaze, sustaining burns on the ankle.

Misfortune struck the neighborhood two days earlier as well when a lire broke out Sunday evening in the kitchen of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jackson’s home located about a half mile away from the Whartons on Route 522. The flames were contained by firefighters from Castleton. Salem, Washington and Sperryville but not before the fire destroyed the kitchen and a back bedroom shared by the Jackson's children.

Hope Hill Baptist Church at Castleton is serving as the center for assistance for both the Whartons and the Jacksons. The two Wharton families
