To combat the storm, which By waters and others described as the single heaviest snowfall in recent Rappahannock history, the highway department called in outside contractors. Equipment was hired from Eldon Farms in Woodville, Richard Compton and Steven Kellerson of Amissville, James Costello in Chester Gap and Champ Carney in Sperryville, Bywaters reported.
Even with the extra help, highway crews worked 12-hour shifts. “In some instances, it was longer. They couldn’t get home so they kept on working another eight-to-eight shift,” the maintenance sunervisnr said. “And in some cases, when they could get home, they couldn’t get back out when their next shift started so we’d have to send a plow in to get them. That’s why some roads were cleared earlier than normal.”
