Adversity brings out the best in all of us. This past weekend, we saw a classic example of that best.
The going rarely gets tougher than it did on Friday when 30 inches of snow smothered the county, creating a near state of emergency. But the storm brought no deaths here, largely because of the spirit of cooperation that came with the flakes.
Highway crews picked up stranded motorists and pulled stalled cars from ditches and drifts. Fire fighters and rescue volunteers camped out at their stations so they coultl reach their vehicles in case of a fire or a heart attack. The emergency service workers opened station house doors to travelers and local people who couldn’t make it home through the almost-blizzard.
Across the county, Rappahannock residents invited friends and strangers alike inside to wait safe and warm by woodstoves until the storm subsided and they could reach their destination without danger.
