“older”), or a child with “special needs” - which can often mean a minor, correctible physical handicap, or a child of a different sex or nationality than you had originally considered. Be prepared to wait up to a year for a “referral”—i.e. to be shown a picture of one child, and then to wait six months or more before that child (if you accept him/her) will be home with you.
The red tape, paperwork, delays and doubts can be agonizing. But in lots of ways it is the period of “testing” that determines your strength of purpose and commitment about adopting.
