What would you call an opportunity to see one of the outstanding plays of the Washington, D.C. threater season right here at home - and at half the D. C. price? That is what Source Theatre is making available to local residents by offering one performance of EQUUS at the Gay Street Theatre in tjie town of Washington at 8 P.M. Friday, February 25.
EQUUS is a psychological ‘Whodunnit.’ The mystery revolves around how a sensitive teenager could perform the abhorrent act of blinding six horses. The play opens with this question as the disturbed teenager, Alan Strang, is referred to child psychiatrist Martin Dysart. Through the electric interaction of doctor and patient, the audience begins to understand the sexual/religious origins of the boy’s act even as more serious questions are raised about the nature of society, culture and sanity itself.
EQUUS was written by Peter Schaffer who spun the tale of EQUUS from an actual event, recorded in a tiny newspaper story, which both repelled and tantalized
