Newbill Miller of Washington urged the supervisors to “get control of real estate taxes,” adding that if they do not, the character of the county will change for the worse. Miller listed three things that contribute heavily to the county’s present character which will be adversely affected by ever increasing real estate taxes: 1) retired people, 2) tourism, and 3) farming.
“We have to spend our money wisely,” Miller warned. Opposing the notion that more money will necessarily improve the school system, Miller said that if a child wants an education he will get it, if he does not he won’t.
