Commencement Speaker

Wakefield School in Huntly is pleased to announce that former Iranian hostage Colonel Leland J. Holland will be the speaker at the Sixth Annual Commencement Exercises.

Holland, a career Army Military Intelligence officer, is currently the post commander at the Vint Hill Farms Station in Warrenton. Holland was the senior embassy official held hostage in Iran from November 4, 1979 until January 20, 1981. He spent a toted of seven and one-half months in solitary confinement, longer than any other military hostage.

Holland was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for the hostage ordeal. He also has been awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal for his role in the successful evacuation of thousands of Americans from Iran during and after the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

Holland has also received the Distinguished Service Medal, the Army’s highest peacetime award, which was awarded following the demise of the Shah’s government in early 1979 when Holland played a key role in the defense and subsequent liberation of the U.S. Embassy and its personnel during the attack by the Iranian rebel forces.

The commencement exercises will be held in the school’s garden on June 16 at 6 p.m. when 23 seniors will be graduated.

Sports Banquet

Wakefield held its annual Sports Banquet this week to hondr the school’s athletes and coaches. In his remarks, Athletic Director Hunt Harris commented that the banquet was a fitting end to what had been a banner year in the growth of Wakefield’s sports program.
