And state Sen. L. Douglas Wilder of Richmond will became the first black to run for statewide office for a major party when he gets the lieutenant gov emor’s nomination. He was the onh one of the three who didn’t have a good idea of who his Republican opponent would be.

“I’ve always said my campaign was David vs. Goliath, and Goliath takes on different forms,” he said Sunday.

Mr. Wilder said he wasn’t surprised at Mr. Chichester’s win. “I knew there was a strong ‘anybody but Coleman’ effort’.”

Mr. Coleman blamed his defeat partly on the campaigns of Mr. Viguerie and Mr. Dawkins.

Mr. Viguerie cut into his base, Mr. Coleman said, and Mr. Dawkins* respectable early showing denied him the first ballot lead and resulting momentum.
