Winners of the patriotic essay
contest sponsored by Amissville Ruritan Club have been announced. In the upper elementary section, Ronald Parker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Parker of Amissville, was named winner among the 39 entries, and received a prize of $10. Runners-up were Jimmy Swindler of Sperryville, son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Swindler, who was awarded $5, and Fletcher King Eastham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Eastham of Washington, who was given a $2 award. Nineteen high school students accepted the challenge to compose essays of the subject, “My Responsibility in Maintaining Freedom.” Taking first place was James F. Massie, Jr. of Amissville, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Massie, who received a $25 savings bondla second place was Monica Walker, daughter of Landon Walker, also of Amissville, who was awarded $10.
