teams. In addition, during the year the first wins ever were earned by the lacrosse, field hockey and basketball teams. The varsity soccer team participated in and won the first conference championship that the school had ever been invited to attend.

Awards were given in three categories to members of the six varsity teams. The player of the year award was voted by team members to the person who, in their opinion, contributed the most to the team. The winners of the most improved and coaches awards were chosen by the coaches of the individual teams.

Player of the year awards went to Russell Row of Amissville (basketball and socc. i), Ann Dunning of Boyce (hockey), Lee Poore of Washington (lacrosse), Valerie Steinier of Culpeper (girls tennis), and Larry Tarr of Warrenton (boys tennis).

Most improved awards were earned by Paul Lackman of Middleburg (basketball), Townley Mailler of Gainseville (hockey and girls tennis), Jerald McDowell of Gainseville (soccer), Jordan Bentley of Middleburg (lacrosse), and Shawn Hunter of Amissville (boys tennis).

The coaches award was given to David Rowzie of Amissville (basketball), Leigh Bentley of Middleburg (hockey), Travis Tisinger of Berryville (soccer and lacrosse), Valerie Steinier of Culpeper (girls tennis), and Larry Tarr of Warrenton (boys tennis).

Essay Award Winner

Valerie Steinier, a junior at Wakefield, has won the award for non-fiction essay in the Shenandoah Writers’ Guild contest held this spring.

Steinier’s essay, entitled “Scott Joplin - The Black Tradition in American Music,” will be published in Showcase, the Writer’s Guild magazine. Steinier is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jean Steinier of Culpeper.

Headmaster William E. Lynn commended Steinier as well as her English teacher Mrs. Lee Buratti, for the excellent essay.
