The one Democrat who didn’t come in for Durrette's criticism was (iov. C harles S. Robb, who helped lead the party to a sweep of the statewide offices in 1981.
“It’s never been my philosophy to look back and run against someone,” he said.
“Chuck Robb’s not going to be governor for the next four years. It’s the differences between us that matter.”
As Mr. Durrette acknowledged, he will have to contend with an opponent who can banner four years as attorney general. But he tried to turn that to his advantage.
“Jerry Baliles’ fascination with government undoubtedly reflects his background. He has spent nearly his entire career as a government lawyer,” Mr. Durrette said.
“Now there is nothing wrong with that. But there is no escaping a central fact: His perspective is narrow and mine is broad.”
Mr. Durrette’s race “is extremely important,” said Frank Fahrenkopf, national Republican chairman, who would like to see a majority of Republican governors by 1991, when the new census will mean redrawn congressional and legislative districts around the country.
“Wyatt’s importance for us is that it will make a difference of two,” he said, “one less Democrat and one more Republican.”
