me, and other teachers, afterwards to express amazement about Mr. Lane’s inability to answer the questions they asked. I’m afraid it was Mr. Lane who held a “blank expression” most of the morning.
My contribution to the day, which Mr. Lane considered unprofessional and disgraceful, consisted of several questions to Mr. Lane. I asked him to explain to the students 1) how the magic figure of $120,000 was calculated, 2) who benefits most from lower taxes, 3) how I can do “more with less” when I teach in a room the size of my livingroom, when I do not have adequate texts or money to buy them, when we all have to ford the stream that pours down the hall every time it rains hard.
On a more personal level, I asked him how I could do “more with less” when I brought home less than $10,000 (less than I used to pay for a year of school tuition and supplies in college), when I ride the school bus to school because my husband needs the wrecked, 12-year-old car to get to work.
In his interview, Mr. Lane failed to mention his disgraceful and excessive use of profanity in front of the students, which I asked him to cease. His rudeness in shouting, “Listen, girl” af(Continued
