NORFOLK — Wyatt B. Durrette began his official tenure as the Republican nominee for governor Saturday with an acknowledgement he starts out trailing.
“I’d have to consider myself the underdog,” Mr. Durrette said after he ''"’accepted the nomination by acclamation at the GOP state convention here with a Democrat-bashing, union-baiting speech.
Gerald L. Baliles, who beat Mr. Durrette four years ago in the attorney general’s race, has no challengers for the Democratic nomination for governor, which will be conferred at his party’s state meeting Saturday.
“He’s the sitting attorney general ... and he has won that race,” said Mr. Durrette, a Chesterfield County lawyer who represented Fairfax County for three terms in the House of Delegates.
Mr. Durrette was able to enter the convention triumphant. His only GOP opponent, 8th District Rep. Stan Parris, withdrew May 1.
