To the editor:
Although things are “business as usual” at school now, and many would rather just forget the entire student walk-out incident, Nelson Lane’s clearly slanderous remarks about me in the May 23 paper cannot stand as the last word.
First let me clarify a few matters. In no way did the teachers or administrators provoke, plan, or encourage the walk-out and each student involved was given parental supik)rt in the form of a note excusing them from classes. Some people would like to underestimate the intelligence and organizational abilities of the students here. Mr. Nelson Lane is one of these people.
I’m sure Mr. Lane arrived that day expecting to find gullible students who would be bowled over by his practiced repartee of excuses for why he. and others on the board of supervisors robbed these students of $120,000. Instead, he found a mature, orderly group of well informed pre-adults who were angry that the quality of their education was in jeopardy and several of their most loved teachers were leaving. Mr. Lane also found that these students would not readily accept his hedging answers to direct questions and illogical explanations. I cannot count the number of students who came to
