• School Bus Accident
A Rappahannock County school bus was involved in a single vehicle accident on Route 659 at 7:25 a.m. on Monday, June 3. The driver, Joan Kaye Hall of Huntly, and her daughter were injured in the accident. They were alone on the bus.
Hall was beginning her morning pick-up route when she attempted to stop at an intersection. State Trooper Rufus A. Baines said that Hall stated that she could not stop due to brake failure. No charges were placed.
The bus, a 1976 International, was totalled in the accident. It is being examined at the county’s garage to determine the cause of any mechanical failure.
• School Board Executive Session
The school board met in an executive session to discuss personnel and legal matters on Thursday, May 30.
During the session, the board approved Ann Marie Burke as a second grade teacher for the 1985-86 school year and accepted the resignations of Rebecca Roberts-Show and Sally Bristol as high school English teachers. The board received an update from the staff on legal matters and adjourned at 8:51 p.m.
• Convention Report
Seven Rappahannock Republican delegates attended the state convention last weekend in Norfolk.
The Rappahannock delegation voted unanimously for Buster O’Brien in his bid for the state attorney general nomination. Deciding who would be the party’s nominee for lieutenant governor caused more of a split in the Rappahannock delegation and caused much of the convention’s excitement.
“Some of the speeches were the standard political yawners, but then Maurice Dawkins, a candidate for the lieutenant governor nomination, spoke,” said Jesse Pond, Rappahannock Republican chairman. “There were about 9,000 people there so the Scope was filled, and he had us all on our feet yelling during his speech.”
Pond said that all of the lights were off except for spotlights during Richard Viguerie’s speech asking for support in his bid for the nomination. “They released balloons and swung the spotlights around when he finished,” Pond said.
Five votes were split between the seven Rappahannock delegates. On the first lieutenant governor ballot, one of the Rappahannock delegates voted for Dawkins, four for John Chichester and two voted for Viguerie. The vote changed to five for Chichester and two for Viguerie on the second ballot.
The 5-‘ vote remained unchanged through the next two ballots until Chichester won the nomination. The convention ended around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
“Dawkins and Viguerie both said that they will extol the virtues of the Republican ticket all over the state until the election,” Pond said. “It looks good for us, but it won’t be easy.”
