Regarding education in Rappahannock County, two things have become clear: 1) in order to attract and retain quality teachers, the county will have to increase teachers’ salaries, and 2) real estate taxes alone should not be depended upon to fund that increase. • Since the county’s revenue, however, derives almost totally $ from real estate taxes, it is hard l to imagine where else money - for teachers’ raises would come from. Obviously the supervisors • would either have to 1) levy a > new tax, or 2) divert existing • funds from a proposed item in • the budget. The Board eventually may have to resort to both tactics. f During the public hearing June 3, at least two residents ; and one supervisor questioned the need for the proposed additions to the high school. They argued that, although the additions may be needed, there are greater needs that should be addressed first, such as the, quality and morale of our teachers.
