Sentenced
Robert Leroy Bowers, owner of Blue Ridge Gun Shop at Amissville, pleaded guilty to one of five felony counts and was sentenced on Monday, July 15. The case was heard by Judge James C. Turk in Federal District Court in Roanoke.
Bowers had been indicted on April 18 on five felony counts of making false statements to apply for and renew his federal firearms license to deal in explosives. The five applications were submitted from 1981 to 1983, and the , Federal District Court Grand Jury indicted Bowers for answering “no” to a question regarding whether or not he had ever been “convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year....”
Bowers made the negative answer on the applications with the knowledge that he had been convicted of forgery, which is punishable by a term of imprisonment of a year, according to the indictments. Each count carried a maximum sentence of five years incarceration and/or a $5,000 fine. Bowers had pleaded not guilty to the charges at a May 14 arraignment.
Jerry Kilgor of the U.S. Attorney’s Office said that, after Bowers pleaded guilty to one of the counts, he received a suspended jail sentence and was placed on probation for three years.
