We have been ministering in Sperryville for several months. When we began we desired to follow the Lord without all the rituals, embellishments and trappings that have become attached to Christianity through the centuries. Not that all (or even most) of these are necessarily wrong, but they are unnecessary, and many of them detract from the worship of the Lord, especially when done through habit and without forethought or intelligent participation. For example, many people can stand half-asleep in a morning worship service and from memory sing the “Doxology” and recite the “Apostles’ Creed”. But how many of these same people ever think about what they are singing and reciting? It is not worship to thus sing and recite, but borders on blasphemy.
Nevertheless we fell into a trap of our own. We spent too much time announcing and holding meetings (like most churches) and not enough on finding people and ministering to them where they are (like the early church). This is ironic in view of our desire to minister to people who had not been (and perhaps could not be) reached by the established churches of the area.
