Peaches are in big demand at the Jenkins’ stand, but the supply doesn’t exist. Thelma noted that “people are asking for peaches by the bushel, but we just don’t have them.”
Thelma hopes for a good fall and is even optimistic about it. She thinks business will pick up. Thelma is grateful to her regular customers, especially when business is slow. “We’ve got regular customers who come back year after year,” she said.
At the Jenkins’ stand, the only items selling as they usually do are ciders and jellies.
Eddie Burke of Sperryville is running a stand this summer for the first time. He doesn’t think business has been slow. The key, he says, is to know how to sell. “You can make money if you know how to run a stand.” One of Burke’s selling techniques is to stay open later than the rest of the stands. I “I get extra business that way,” he ' said.
Peaches are selling best at Burke’s stand. To meet the demand, he just hauled 40 boxes of peaches from Columbia, S. C., to Sperryville.
Geneva and Marshall Burke manage Burke’s Market in Sperryville. Geneva says business is fair but “not as good as it was last year.” She thinks that is because of the peach shortage. The best sellers this year at Burke’s Market are apples, corn and tomatoes.
Does Geneva enjoy running the stand? “I like it if I can keep halfway busy. October is the best month.”
Geneva says business is slow because of the poor economy, which forces people to buy only those things they really need.
George and Pearl Hawkins have owned and managed a stand for 15 years. When interviewed, they had only been open for a week, so they felt it was too early to tell how business would be. However George did say that business so far was “nothing to brag about.”
