Bush lo campaign
for Durrette
RICHMOND—Vice President George Bush will come to Richmond Aug. 7 to campaign for Wyatt B. Durrette Jr., the Republican candidate for governor.
President Reagan had been scheduled to come July 30 but had to cancel because of his cancer operation.
The White House then indicated that a vice presidential visit may be arranged and a date was confirmed within 24 hours,” Durrette said Friday.
The Bush visit will include a reception and luncheon at the Richmond Marriott Hotel.
Clarke school
fund grows
The Clarke County Board of Supervisors reluctantly added half-million dollars last week to the $4 million it previously promised for new school construction.
But the supervisors also sent the School Board a message that the amount will have to do the job because no further requests for more money will be considered in the near future.
The supervisors agreed to raise their spending ceiling in response to a letter from the School Board asking for a two-phase project, with $5 million going for a basic new high school, and $1.5 million coming at a later date to add such “amenities” as athletic fields, vocational shops and possibly an auditorium. No time schedule was suggested for the second phase.
The School Board previously had held out for $6 million to build a new high school. The supervisors prefer a $3.5 million intermediate school and improvements to the existing high school.
