Sunday July 21 at 9 a.m., 28 “ultra marathon” bicyclists left Huntington Beach in sunny southern California on the world’s longest bicycle race.
Less than nine days later, the first of those cyclists is expected to pedal through Clarke County in the final leg of their grueling cross-country race for a $20,000 purse.
In only three years, the ocean-toocean Race Across America has become one of the most popular bicycle races in the country. The non-stop 3,136-mile race will end in Atlantic City, N.J.
White Post, Boyce and Berryville are among the hundreds of communities, big and small, which will see the racers pass through. The leaders are expected here about 3 a.m. Tuesday, July 30. Three females are among the racers.
The race, sponsored by the Great American Chocolate Chip Cookie Co., is considered the toughest endurance event in all of sports.
ABC Sports, which won an Emmy for its coverage of the innaugural race in 1982, will again tape the race and will broadcast it in the spring of 1986.
