“There are love songs, but they aren’t like today’s love songs,” Dick said. “Some people think that they’re too romantic, but the love songs from the past are as good as they get.” Some of the songs that seem silly have stories behind them, like what was being talked about in the nation or the artist’s personal history, that give the songs meaning.
“Sometimes the artists would make fun of themselves or of society in the songs, and through the years people have started to believe that they meant what the lyrics were literally,” Dick said. “Certain artists would change their names and do different styles of songs.”
He said that most people who criticize songs that have survived from the early recording years would be surprised to hear the original versions. “I began to wonder why songs like ‘School Days’, which was written in 1902, have hung ir ”id all of these years,”
