Bankston said that he would tend to think that the attacks were done by dogs. Snead and Updike are hoping that there will not be any other attacks, but they do plan to set traps if there is another killing.
Local jurisdictions have historically been responsible for compensating owners of livestock killed by dogs if the dog owners cannot be determined. State law provides that owners are entitled to the fair market value of any livestock or poultry killed by a dog(s) as compensation for their losses.
The compensation amount is to be paid by the local jurisdiction, in this case the county, according to state law if: “(i) the claimant has furnished evidence within sixty days of discovery of the quantity and value of the dead or injured livestock and the reasons the claimant believes that death or injury was caused by a dog; (ii) the animal warden or other officer shall have been notified of the incident within seventytwo hours of its discovery; and (iii) the claimant first has exhausted his legal remedies against the owner, if known, of the dog doing the damage....Exhaustion shall mean a judgment against the owner of the dog upon which an execution has been returned unsatisfied.”
