He devotes a lot of time to the record collection and the taping, but he works as a calligrapher. Most of his assignments come from Washington, D. C., and he once commuted every day when he first moved to Rappahannock in 1968. Now, however, he usually has to go to D. C. once or twice a week. The rest of his time he spends working at home or down in the basement taping and listening.
He has recordings and knowledge of artists that most people have never heard of besides artists whose fame still lives like Louis Armstrong, Enrico Caruso and A1 Jolson. Dick has collected some rare recordings including a Caruso picture record and a record made by Valentino that he was not pleased with, but that was released after his death.
