Judge Clarke approved an order Wednesday changing the sentencing date from Oct. 15 to Nov. 12. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tommy E. Miller, who prosecuted the case, agreed to the continuance.
“It was just too close to John’s trial, and we would like to postpone it as long as possible to let things settle down,” said J. Brian Donnelly, one of Arthur Walker’s two court-appointed lawyers.
Walker’s brother, John A. Walker Jr., 48, a Norfolk private detective and a retired chief warrant officer, will be tried in federal court in Baltimore.
Arthur Walker, 50, was the first of four men—including John Walker’s son, Michael, and Jerry A. Whitworth of Davis, Calif.—to be tried on charges of selling Navy secrets to the Soviet Union.
Marital rape law urged
NORFOLK — Virginia should pass a law to protect wives against rape by their husbands, regardless of whether the couple is living together, women’s rights advocates and lawyers urged a General Assembly task force.
Most of the 12 people who testified Thursday urged the committee to devise a strong marital rape law. The hearing was the second of four planned by the 12-member panel before it compiles its recommendations for the 1986 General Assembly.
Among those testifying were two women who id that they hao been raped by their husbands. Both used pseudonyms. One said she had been separated from her husband about a month when he came back and raped he’.
“I t It so dirty, so cheap,” she said. “I felt like committing suicide.”
Marriage does not give husbands unlimited sexual rights to their wives, said Laura Everhart, an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Chesapeake.
“A married woman should be afforded the same protection as any other woman,” she said.
