I’m glad that Pat Bruce listens (letter, Sept. 5) to the source of Wicca (or “witchcraft” as it was wrongly named by the patriarchal priests of the Inquisition. The practice condemned by the New Testament is “pharmakeia” — a word more descriptive of the recently disclosed practices of several giant pharmaceutical manufacturers.)
“Wicca” is derived from the word for “wisdom,” whom the Old Testament book of Proverbs presents as a divine, feminine being who says, “I have stretched out my hand and no man regarded.”
And since we are dealing with the reality behind woman’s and man’s doctrines, I can say that it is exactly this disregarding of the feminine aspect of God that Pat Bruce condemns — in the company of wisdom — as “patriarchy.”
