With this traditional invocation, Wakefield School in Huntly opened the 1985-86 session, the 13th in the school’s history. In remarks made during opening ceremonies on Monday, Headmaster William Lynn urged students and faculty to hold steadfastly to the vision of academic excellence that had inspired the school’s founding.
“With 12 years of rapid growth and expansion behind us,” Lynn said, “we have come to the end of the beginning, but as we enter a new phase, we must not leave behind the pioneering spirit of our early years. With a continuing renewal of spirit and commitment, Wakefield can become during the next decade one of the great educational institutuions of our land,” Lynn told his young audience.
Attending a Wakefield assembly for the first time were over 100 new students from all over Northern Virginia, five other states and four foreign countries. According to school officials, the new bus services this year to Luray, Woodstock and Charles Town, W.Va. have brought in students from more distant points * and helped to swell the school’s enrollment. In addition, the school’s two boarding houses are reported full.
