The top three runners heading into yesterday’s scheduled opener with Luray were expected to be juniors Jonathan Watson, Marley Hay and John Dodson, who are also what Spieker is calling her “experienced” group, one of three informal breakdowns of the team.
Also on the experienced crew are juniors Neil Burke and Todd Williams and sophomores Mike Dunn, Tom Taylor and Tony Clark.
A middle group that has run well but lacks competing experience includes junior Rodney Grimsley, David Bick, the team’s only senior, and Greg Daczewitz, Butch Foster, Adam Clatterbuck, Wesley Jenkins, Dan Herman and John Brown.
Also running with the team, although ineligible to compete, are Christopher Moyles, Corey Thompson and Philip Daczewitz. Seventh grader Mathew Eidson is also running with the team.
On the girls’ side, the district will be something of a mystery.
This is the first year of formal competition for the girls, although some of the talent could have been assessed in a “run” last year, although times and finishes were not recorded.
The girls will also run in a state meet for the first time at the Group A level this year.
It would appear that Karen Ludwick, a senior, will lead the team. Ludwick finished fourth in the girls’ run last year and lends experience.
Denise Eidson (eighth in the run a year ago), Bonnie Grimsby and Heather Blevins are juniors with some running experience, whether that be cross country or on the spring track.
The team’s sophomores include Kelly Brown and Leslie Nichols and the freshmen class is represented by Kathy Dodson and Anna Nichols, both of whom ran last year but were ineligible to compete.
Said Spieker: “The girls’ competition is wide open.”
