Rappahannock High School cross country coach Ann Spieker has a problem most high school coaches would love to have. She has too many bodies for positions on her team.
But she also has a problem nobody wants. The Golden Panthers have no home course. Oh, they can lap the elementary school enough times to stretch the race to its 3.1 miles, and they can practice through the wooded trails of Howard Holschuh’s farm near Rock Mills.
Still, the course the team ran a year ago, on the other side of U.S. 522/211, was sold and divided into parcels. The team can no longer run there.
Other neighboring farms provide obstacles: namely, livestock which tend to interfere with those running for fast times.
So, the Panthers will settle for
