In fact, as a high school sophomore, my baseball coach once stopped a scrimmage because, he said, he lost sight of his first baseman. That was me. “Where’s McFarlane?” bellowed the coach who didn’t know my first name until the postseason awards ceremony. “Oh, there he is; he just turned sideways.”

Like when somebody said I could turn at a certain angle to make the passing wind whistle.
Or about having to run around in the shower to get wet.
In baseball, when the very nature of the sport permits its participants time to exchange such barbs, the thin-skinned get gutted.
When I’d get thrown out trying to steal second — on a pass ball — you know the grief has only begun. Or when it took a double off the wall to score me from second, I knew I that would draw some attention from the bench. I was not particularly fleet of foot.
