Chichester needs a bit of the same lesson, as does O’Brien.
Wilder is the best orator in either camp, and if any candidate has advnaced any new ideas it has been the Democrats’ candidate for lieutenant governor. This does not mean that he is about to win the election, although he is said to be making gains. Most observers put him far behind Chichester at this point, although he is battling mightily to pick up hotly-contested ground.
Terry has concentrated mainly on raising money up to this point, and on a stock speech about why she would like to be elected attorney general. So far it has worked well, but in the weeks ahead she and O’Brien will have to first define and then confront each other on the issues involved in the race.
The point we are making, however, is that both the Democratic and Republican campaigns are opening on a note which seems intentionally designed to turn the voters off. For some reason it appears that both parties have decided that a boring, low-key and uninteresting campaign fits their strategy this year.
That’s the irony of politics in the Old Dominion.
While the politicians appear to be trying to make the elections as uninteresting as possible for the voters, the voters could be getting ready to add a new and historic chapter to their chronicle.
But if they are, this potentially historic election is getting off, again to quote the old-timers, to “a mighty quiet start” in the precincts of the commonwealth.
